On August 10, 2026, US President Trump posted on social media that after Iran demanded compensation from the United States for the military conflict, he also wanted to make a claim against Iran and had instructed US negotiators to explicitly include this demand in all future negotiation agendas.  

Trump said that Iranian negotiators are demanding compensation for the losses suffered during the past five months of military conflict, and "this issue has never been mentioned in any previous negotiations or meetings. He is now also demanding Iran to compensate for the casualties caused by the use of roadside bombs and in numerous conflicts, including compensating the families of the victims of the attack on the USS Cole destroyer, as well as thousands of people who died in combat.  

According to a report by Iranian news television on August 8, 2026, Iranian Supreme National Security Council Secretary Zolegardel stated that if the United States does not change its behavior, the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed. The prerequisite for reopening the Strait of Hormuz is that the United States meets five conditions, including the permanent cessation of military operations against Iran, including the return of Iran's frozen assets and compensation for the losses caused to Iran by related military actions.  

On October 12, 2000, a small boat loaded with explosives launched a suicide bombing attack on the USS Cole, which was refueling at Aden Port in Yemen, and severely damaged the ship, resulting in the death of 17 US military personnel.
