The Maputo BRT, which has been under preparation for more than ten years, has finally started construction and is being undertaken by Henan International. A $119 million contract will be signed to build a new corridor connecting the suburbs of the capital.

The project covers bus lanes, terminal stations, stations along the route, stops, and power and communication access. The contract price is approximately 7.616 billion meticals, equivalent to approximately 119 million US dollars, with a construction period of 24 months and a planned delivery date of 2028. The first phase will build a 16.5-kilometer central isolated dedicated channel and open 46 kilometers of new operating lines, connecting Maputo, Matola, and Malakwane.

The first phase of 71 electric buses is equipped with electronic ticketing and real-time passenger information systems, transporting approximately 125000 passengers per day. The project received a grant of 250 million US dollars from the International Development Association of the World Bank and was approved in August 2022. It is coordinated by the Maputo Urban Transport Bureau. The headquarters of Henan International is located in Zhengzhou, and this construction has attracted the participation of Chinese equipment suppliers.Editor/Min Jing
