Under the blue waves of the Caspian Sea, a great energy chess game quietly came to an end. Total Energy and partner companies have made a decision on the comprehensive development of the Absheron gas field, which was discovered in the Caspian Sea in 2011 and is about to unleash its full production potential.

On September 26, 2026, Total Energy, along with its partners SOCAR and XRG, made the final investment decision regarding the comprehensive development of the Absheron natural gas condensate field. The gas field is located in the Caspian Sea, 100 kilometers southeast of Baku, with approximately 140 billion cubic meters of recoverable natural gas reserves. The comprehensive development will increase the total production of the gas field to 6 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year and 47000 barrels of condensate per day. The project is expected to be put into operation in 2029. Natural gas will be simultaneously supplied to the domestic market and exported to Türkiye through existing infrastructure, thus strengthening regional energy security. The project is renowned for its innovative design and low-carbon footprint, utilizing 4 subsea wells for extraction, fully electrified onshore factories, and greenhouse gas emission intensity below 4 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent per barrel of oil equivalent.Editor/Min Jing
