On October 13, 2026, the Alexandria Port Authority of Egypt signed a memorandum of understanding with Xiamen Jianfa Co., Ltd. to develop a specialized dry bulk terminal project at the Al Max Port in Alexandria. From the port of Sohna on the Red Sea coast to the port of Alexandria on the Mediterranean coast, an industrial logistics corridor connecting the north and south of Egypt is accelerating its formation. As the first project among the four planned terminals at Al Max Port, this dry bulk terminal carries the expectation of upgrading Egypt's heavy industry exports and marks another milestone for Chinese enterprises in the North African port infrastructure field.

Two berths supporting construction

According to the planning scheme released by the Egyptian Ministry of Transport, the core construction content of the project includes designing two main berths that can accommodate large bulk cargo ships, supporting standardized cargo yards, silos, and modern loading and unloading transfer systems, constructing a comprehensive logistics center to optimize truck traffic organization, and planning to enhance the connection with the Egyptian national railway network to achieve multimodal transportation by sea, rail, and road. This terminal is the first of four terminals under development at Al Max Port. Minister Wazir stated that after the completion of the Al Max dry bulk terminal, it is expected to be able to dock three large cargo ships simultaneously. After the dock is put into operation, it is expected to improve the distribution efficiency of cement, steel, and heavy industry raw materials and finished products in Egypt, and enhance Egypt's export competitiveness.

Serve the North South Logistics Corridor

The Al Max Port dry bulk terminal project has a clear location positioning in Egypt's port strategy. This project is an integral part of the Egyptian government's promotion of the construction of the Great Alexandria Port. The overall planning of the Great Alexandria Port includes 5 breakwaters with a total length of 7120 meters, which have entered the construction phase. The Sokhna to Alexandria logistics corridor aims to connect the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, improving the efficiency of the north-south logistics corridor in Egypt. As the Red Sea end node of the corridor, the expansion project of Sokhna Port has made phased progress, and commercial operations of three new port pools and transfer terminals will be launched in July 2026. Minister Wazir emphasized that the project is in line with Egypt's overall strategy of developing seaports and integrated logistics areas, attracting foreign investment, and expanding private sector participation in transportation infrastructure construction in the 2030 Vision. Multiple companies are expanding their presence in Egypt

Xiamen Jianfa is not the first Chinese enterprise to enter the Egyptian port field. Egypt has continued to attract international port operators to participate in its port expansion plans in recent years. In 2023, a consortium consisting of Heji Port, Dafei Shipping, and COSCO Shipping won the $1.6 billion project for the new container terminal at Sokona Port. AD Ports Group acquired a 19.3% stake in Alexander Container and Cargo Handling Company in 2025, with a transaction value of approximately $278 million. In addition, China Harbour has participated in the construction of the container terminal at Alexandria Abukir Port, and companies such as China Road and Bridge Corporation have multiple port and infrastructure projects underway in Egypt. With the continuous construction of the Sokhna to Alexandria logistics corridor in Egypt, North African ports and multimodal transport infrastructure will continue to release the demand for supporting facilities such as port machinery and warehousing facilities, and domestic equipment companies will sustainably track the follow-up implementation of projects.Editor/Gao Xue
