According to the Ministry of Water Resources, the number of newly started major water conservancy projects in the first three quarters of 2026 has exceeded the entire year of 2025.

According to Zhou Zhiwei, Deputy Director of the Planning and Planning Department of the Ministry of Water Resources, from January to September, a total of 41400 water conservancy projects were implemented nationwide, including 28 major water conservancy projects such as the construction of the Three Gorges Water Transport New Channel and the allocation of water resources in the Liaodong Peninsula of Liaoning Province. The number of new water conservancy projects started exceeded last year's total.

During the same period, China completed a total investment of 795 billion yuan in water conservancy construction, employing 2.01 million people and maintaining a high level of operation.

In terms of specific projects, the Three Gorges Water Transport New Channel Project is the first major landmark project under construction in China during the 15th Five Year Plan period, including the Three Gorges Hub New Channel and the Gezhouba Shipping Capacity Expansion. On October 10th, the construction of the upstream and downstream cofferdams for the expansion of Gezhouba Shipping officially began, marking the comprehensive entry of the project into the main construction phase. After the completion of the Shangbaishi Water Conservancy Hub Project in Ningde, Fujian, it will fundamentally solve the flood and waterlogging problems of more than 600000 people in eastern Fujian. The flood control project of Tiaoxi in the the Taihu Lake Lake basin has also started recently, which will effectively complement the weakness of flood control in the the Taihu Lake Lake basin.

In addition, China has completed the construction of 2012 rural water supply projects by 2026, and it is expected that by the end of 2026, the rural tap water penetration rate will reach 97%.

Li Ming, Director of the Planning and Planning Department of the Ministry of Water Resources, stated that the goal of starting 40 new major water conservancy projects and completing a water conservancy construction investment of 1 trillion yuan for the whole year will be ensured.
