The sunshine of the Sahara is moving from lighting light bulbs to driving industry. In Dandala, Egypt, a marriage between light and storage will weave 1GW of photovoltaics and 200MWh of energy storage into a directional energy supply network, injecting green electricity into the high-energy aluminum industry and boosting carbon reduction and export competitiveness.

Signing and landing
The Dandala solar energy storage project in Egypt, with a total investment of approximately 650 million US dollars, recently signed three core agreements witnessed by Egyptian Prime Minister Madbouli. The project plans to implement 1GW photovoltaic with 200MWh energy storage in two phases.
Multi party cooperation
Norwegian development company Scatec has signed a financing agreement with three multilateral banks, including the European Investment Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the African Development Bank. The grid connection agreement was jointly signed by multiple parties including the Egyptian Transmission Company, and the National Bank of Egypt participated in the project through equity participation.

Targeted energy supply
The highlight of the project is targeted power supply, providing clean electricity to Egypt Aluminum Company, covering one-third of its electricity consumption, helping the aluminum industry reduce carbon emissions, enhance export competitiveness, and adapt to the EU carbon border adjustment mechanism. This project not only expands green power, but also provides carbon compliance solutions for high energy consuming export industries.
