The congested traffic has long plagued the capital city of Bangladesh, Dhaka, limiting commuting efficiency and slowing down the pace of urban development. On October 27, 2026, Dhaka Mass Transit Limited held a centralized signing ceremony in the conference room of the MRT6 line depot, and the contracts for four construction sections of Dhaka Metro Line 1 and Line 5 North Line were officially finalized. The total amount of the contract signed this time is 94.8 billion taka, and a consortium of Chinese enterprises has won three of the contracts, laying a solid foundation for the dense urban rail transit network and injecting strong momentum into the local infrastructure market.

Four sections of flowers fall on each household

This centralized signing includes a total of four construction contracts, covering various types of projects such as vehicle depot civil engineering, elevated stations, and line transition sections. The CP02 section of Metro Line 1 is undertaken by a consortium led by China Hydropower, with a contract amount of 42.8 billion taka, equivalent to approximately 350 million US dollars. The project involves the civil construction of the vehicle depot, requiring the construction of 49 supporting facilities, including workshops, warehouses, and operation management centers. The CP07 section of Metro Line 1 will be undertaken by a consortium led by China Railway Engineering Corporation and participated by China Railway Major Bridge Corporation, with a total amount of 25.3 billion taka, equivalent to 205 million US dollars. It will construct a 5-kilometer elevated bridge and three elevated stations, and simultaneously build a transition section between underground and elevated lines near the Balu River.

The CP02 bid for Metro Line 5 has been awarded to a consortium consisting of local and South Korean companies, with a total amount of 18.4 billion taka, equivalent to approximately 150 million US dollars. The main construction includes the civil engineering of the vehicle depot, as well as the construction of the operation control center, vehicle depot control center office building, parking lot, warehouse, and maintenance workshop. The CP03 section of Metro Line 5 also belongs to a consortium led by China Railway Engineering Corporation and participated by China Railway Major Bridge Corporation, with a total amount of 26.7 billion taka, equivalent to 220 million US dollars. The construction scope includes two sections of 6.5 kilometers of elevated lines and five elevated stations.

The scale of dual line construction is grand

The overall investment volume of the two subway lines is huge, with a total cost estimated to exceed 2 trillion taka, of which 1.2 trillion taka is invested in Metro Line 1 and 930 billion taka is invested in Metro Line 5 North Line. The route layout is in line with the development trend of Dhaka city, with a total length of 31 kilometers for Metro Line 1 and 20 kilometers for Metro Line 5 North Line. After both lines are completed and put into use, they can share the road traffic pressure, shorten the commuting time of citizens, promote the optimization of public transportation structure, reduce motor vehicle exhaust emissions, improve the urban environment, and lay a solid transportation foundation for the long-term development of Dhaka.

Strictly control the construction quality and impact

At the signing ceremony, Mohammad Zia Ulhak, Secretary of the Bangladesh Highway Department, presented work requirements to all parties. He emphasized that the executing agencies and contractors must complete the project on schedule and strictly adhere to the bottom line of engineering quality and safety. Keywords: Dhaka Metro, Chinese funded construction, rail transit

During the construction process, efforts should be made to minimize interference with the lives of surrounding residents and minimize environmental disturbances caused by the project construction. Engineers from relevant units and contractors maintain efficient communication and collaboration, promptly resolve various issues, and ensure the steady progress of the project without any delays.Editor/Huang jiali
