Recently, the wind in Jiji Lake Industrial Park in Zhundong Development Zone has brought a sense of winter. At the construction site of Xinjiang Xinye Zhundong 2 billion cubic meters/year coal to natural gas project, the long arm of the tower crane rises and falls in the morning mist, and welding sparks splash from the steel structure work surface. 4500 builders are distributed on a construction site of about 148 hectares, slowly transforming a desert into a factory like appearance. Before the start of construction, there were only sandstorms here. After the sound of the machines on June 10, 2026, the ground pipes and roads of the entire factory were laid out, and the foundations of the equipment were gradually formed. Now, more than 300000 cubic meters of concrete have been poured, and some of the main frames have been capped. Before winter, there was also an additional medical service center on site, and a large project was built in the desert, settling in for the daily care of the builders.

Starting a grand plan in the Gobi Desert

Not stopping work in winter is the rhythm set on site. The construction of the entire factory's ground management, roads, and some public works has been completed. The foundation engineering of the entire factory's equipment has been completed, and the installation nodes of major equipment have been successfully landed. Next, we will scientifically organize winter construction, promote the completion of the civil engineering framework structure topping out, and achieve an orderly handover from civil engineering to installation processes. The 23 participating units are all state-owned enterprises under China Chemical Engineering Group Co., Ltd., working together with 4500 construction personnel on the same site, striving to start production in December 2028 and pushing forward the construction period in segments.

A journey of coal

Turning coal into gas does not rely on simple combustion. The project is invested by Xinjiang Xinye State owned Assets Operation (Group) Co., Ltd. with a total investment of 15.4 billion yuan. It adopts the crushed coal pressurized gasification process, with an annual conversion of 5.34 million tons of raw coal and an annual production of 2.019 billion cubic meters of natural gas. It also produces more than ten high value-added chemical products such as tar, CPC, and naphtha. A piece of coal is classified and utilized based on its quality, producing gas first, followed by oil and chemicals, and its value is amplified layer by layer. The project undertakes 5 national technological equipment innovation demonstration tasks, promoting the large-scale process, localization of key equipment, intelligent production control, and independent core technology. The construction team led by the EPC general contractor Saiding Engineering Co., Ltd. has previously completed the general contracting contract and is a well-established engineering force in the domestic coal to natural gas field. Gas enters the ten thousand mile pipeline network

Gas must be produced and sent out. The Zhundong Coalfield is the largest and most resource rich integrated coalfield in China. The 15th Five Year Plan for the Development of Petroleum and Natural Gas issued by the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration has clearly promoted the construction of coal to oil and gas strategic bases such as Zhundong in Xinjiang. The Zhundong Coal to Natural Gas Pipeline mainline project, which is 780 kilometers long and will be connected to the West East Gas Pipeline network after completion, is also advancing synchronously with the base. Integrating coal to gas into a national network can increase upstream resource supply and provide an additional layer of protection for downstream markets. In Song Baowei's view, as a key energy project to ensure the supply of natural gas to the country, the completion of the project will effectively enhance the country's natural gas supply capacity, promote the efficient and clean transformation of coal resources, assist in the construction of the Zhundong Coal to Oil and Gas Strategic Base, and have significant practical significance in promoting the high-quality development of Xinjiang's energy industry and transforming coal resource advantages into economic industry advantages.
