Ruzizi III Energy Co., Ltd. is the developer of the Ruzizi III regional hydropower project on the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The company is inviting contractors to submit expressions of intent for engineering-procurement-construction (EPC) bids.
The Ruzizi III regional hydropower project emphasizes the importance of ensuring a reliable and affordable power supply to achieve a sustainable economic transformation. It is expected that the project will be shared by Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the power generation will exceed 147MW. Therefore, the three participating countries will distribute power equally and Rwanda will receive at least 50MW of power.
The power plant is establishing a public-private partnership. The sponsors of the private sector projects are Kenya’s Industrial Revitalization Service and Norway’s SN Power and the public parties, the Government of Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda.
The project will be located on the Ruzizi River on the border between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. The EPC contract will include engineering, procurement, construction, testing and commissioning of a 45m high dam and its associated spillway, low-water outlet and ecological flow power station. The spillway is 3.8 kilometers long, 6 to 7m in diameter, and concrete-lined tunnel. From the dam reservoir to the power station, pressure pipes and unit pressure pipes, power stations and switch stations, a 220 kV double-circuit transmission line with a length of 8.3 kilometers will connect the Ruzzi III substation and the power distribution station in the Kamaniyola region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The passage from Bugarama, Rwanda and Kamaniyola, Democratic Republic of Congo to the dam, and all ancillary and related works.
The power station will have three generating units with an installed capacity of at least 150MW. Ruzizi III Energy Limited will pre-qualify contractors and consortia to bid for RIII-EPC contracts. The prequalification documents will be provided free of charge in electronic format in a dedicated virtual data room.
