According to Jiandao.com, the Saudi Port Authority (Mawani) and Dubai Port World launched the construction of the first phase of the Jeddah Islamic Port Southern Container Terminal Development Project on October 7, 2021.

The development work will be carried out in four stages and is scheduled to be completed in 2024. It includes improvements to enable the terminal to serve five ships at the same time and handle the largest container ship currently in operation and in the future, with a cargo capacity of up to 26,000 TEUs. The project is part of a new 30-year commercial vesting contract signed between Mahwani and DP World in December 2019.

The project will help transform Jeddah into a major international trade and logistics center. According to the Lloyds Bank’s annual report, the Islamic Port of Jeddah will become the 37th largest port in the world in 2020, jumping five places from 2019. The increase in container transportation capacity has promoted this leap. In 2020, the container throughput of the hub will reach 4.767 million TEUs, an increase of 6.8% from the 4.43 million containers in 2019.

The success of the port can be attributed to the upgrade of the container terminal operations following the signing of a new commercial vesting contract by the Saudi Port Authority. The development value is S$9 billion, which has increased the carrying capacity of the container station by more than 70%. The report shows that among the 100 largest ports in the world, there are two other Saudi companies, King Abdullah Port ranked 84th, and King Abdul Aziz Port ranked 93rd. The Kingdom has also improved its global classification of port network performance, ranking 16th internationally in terms of the ability to pass cargo. Saudi Arabia has a wild port network along the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf coast, making it the largest port network in the region.Editor/XuNing
