Shell and its partner Petronas will start developing the Rosmari-Marjoram gas field offshore Malaysia. Shell brand Sarawak Shell Berhad, which owns an 80% operating stake, and Carigali, the upstream arm of Petronas, have made a final investment decision on the project.

Discovered by Rosmari and Marjoram in 2014, it is a deep-water sour gas field located 220 kilometers off the coast of Bintulu, Sarawak, Malaysia. Shell said the development of the Rosmari-Marjoram project is important to ensure a continuous gas supply to the Petronas LNG complex in Bintulu.

The project, which is estimated to produce 800 million standard cubic feet of natural gas per day, is expected to begin producing natural gas in 2026, the company said. Zoe Yujnovich, Shell Upstream Director, said: "Rosmari-Marjoram will help provide a safe and reliable energy supply in a responsible and efficient manner.

This showcases our Powering Progress strategy to power life, create value and reduce emissions by powering Rosmari-Marjoram with renewable energy. Shell said the Rosmari-Marjoram development would include a subsea tie-back, a remotely operated offshore wellhead platform and an onshore gas plant in Bintulu. Its infrastructure will also include a 207-kilometer pipeline, said to be one of the longest sour wet offshore pipelines in the world, that will bring gas to shore.

The project will be powered primarily by renewable energy, with the offshore platform powered by a 240-panel solar farm. Additionally, its onshore plant will be powered by a hydroelectric power plant, with diesel generators and batteries used as backup, and will be connected to the Sarawak grid system.
