While Indians were still reeling from a deadly train derailment that killed nearly 300 people in the east of the country on the night of June 2, a bridge across the Ganges River collapsed in the northeast.

Officials in the north-eastern state of Bihar say there have been no casualties. The collapse occurred on a river bridge whose foundation was laid in 2015 and was due to be completed in 2020.

The bridge, which spans the Ganges River, was touted as a boon to local transport and economic development. But Indian media said the bridge had been in bad condition for the past seven years and was still under construction at the time of the collapse. Some Indian Internet users have claimed that the total cost of the bridge has reached Rs 1,700 Crore, although officials have not confirmed the accuracy of this figure.

It was the second time the bridge had collapsed after being damaged in a storm in April 2023. According to Indian media, there were several bridge collapses in the region in 2022.Editor/XingWentao
