In November 2018, China and Chile signed a memorandum of understanding on the Belt and Road cooperation. The smooth trade brought about by the the Belt and Road cooperation has made China Chile relations closer and closer. In the past five years, China has carried out in-depth cooperation with Chile in infrastructure construction, energy, informatization and other aspects through the the Belt and Road Initiative.

Chilean Ambassador to China Ultador introduced that in his hometown, Chinese companies are investing in the construction of a new road that connects small towns in his hometown with key roads, thereby promoting the development of these remote towns.

Ambassador Urtado referred to the submarine optical cable project at the southern end of Chile as a representative project of the the Belt and Road Initiative, and emphasized the importance of the project for the development of Chile's digital economy. Through cooperation with Huawei, this project can achieve digital connectivity in the southernmost part of Chile near Antarctica, with a total length of over 2800 kilometers, achieving e-commerce and other functions.

In addition, the project also connects the southernmost point of Chile with Argentina, creating a new market and new connectivity. Therefore, from both an economic and social perspective, this is a positive project. The the Belt and Road Initiative has played a positive role in promoting the development of Chile's digital economy and brought new opportunities and challenges to Chile.

Ambassador Urtado believes that the the Belt and Road Initiative has promoted cooperation between South American countries and the Asia Pacific region, accelerated the integration process, which is consistent with Chile's traditional foreign policy, and Chile has therefore become a bridge between South American countries and China, even the Asia Pacific region.
