With the rapid development of Danzhou, whether it is irrigation water or the tourism development of Haihua Island, it needs sufficient water supply. Recently, the Hainan Provincial Development and Reform Commission recently approved the feasibility study report for the water supply project in Qiongbei, Hainan Province. According to the plan, the project will start construction in 2020.

According to the approved contents disclosed by the Provincial Development and Reform Commission, the main construction contents of the project include: the total length of the West Main Canal is 54.87 kilometers, of which the current status is 5.90 kilometers, the reconstruction and expansion is 21.33 kilometers, and the new construction is 27.64 kilometers. 33.47 kilometers long; 35 new branch canals (pipes), 119.99 kilometers long, 2 retrofits, 5.76 kilometers long, 3 new supplementary branch canals (pipes), 3.1 kilometers long; 3 new urban and rural water supply pipes, 7.50 kilometers long; 1 new pump station; 261 canal buildings.

The Qiongbei Northwest Water Supply Project is a key project for the allocation of water resources in the entire Qiongbei area. It is combined with the Maiwan Water Control Project, Tianjiaotan Water Control Project and Songtao East Irrigation District to ensure water safety in the northern region. The project has been included in the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan for Water Conservancy Reform and Development", "Hainan Water Network Construction Plan" and "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan for Water Development in Hainan Province" and other important plans.

It is reported that the Northwest Qiongbei Water Supply Project uses the Nandu River Songtao Reservoir as the main water source and jointly dispatches with local water resources to achieve the connection and replenishment of the Nandu River to the Chunjiang, Beimen River, Zhubi River, Shuiming River and other inflowing sea rivers. Small, supplement more with less, support with dry and strong, joint scheduling, comprehensively improve the water safety guarantee capacity in the western and northwestern Danzhou and western Baisha areas.

The project is a key water conservancy project related to the entire Qiongbei region and even Hainan Province, which can guarantee the water safety of Danzhou City. The project will draw 314 million cubic meters of annual water from Songtao Reservoir, which can solve 720,000 mu of designed irrigation. Agricultural irrigation, living for 630,000 people, and industrial water use in urban and rural areas; at the same time, it replaces some of the ecological water that flows into small watersheds alone to ensure the discharge of ecological flows during dry seasons.
