On the morning of June 18, 2024, the Kenya Swak Dam, meticulously constructed by China Energy Construction Gezhouba Group, reached a decisive moment in its main construction, marking a key milestone in the basic completion of the project. As the largest comprehensive water conservancy hub project in Kenya, this historic moment witnessed significant progress in the project when the last batch of backfill material was accurately filled to the top of the dam.
Kenya's Minister of Water, Environmental Health and Irrigation, Zacharia Mwanji Njeru, stated during his on-site inspection of the Swak Dam project that the completion of the project will significantly alleviate the local water resource shortage and bring lasting benefits to the local residents. In recent years, Kenya has achieved fruitful results in the joint construction of the the Belt and Road Initiative, and the successful implementation of the Swak Dam Project is a vivid manifestation of the deepening comprehensive strategic partnership between Kenya and China.

According to Tang Yaya, General Manager of China Gezhouba Group Co., Ltd. Kenya Branch, since the start of construction in 2018, the Swak Dam project has not only created about 2000 employment opportunities for the local area of Kenya, but also achieved a localization rate of over 90% of employees. In addition, the project actively fulfilled its social responsibility and successfully implemented a series of supporting projects, including the construction of 9 new buildings with hospital functions, 6 water wells, and the repair of 16 schools in the surrounding residential areas. During the project construction process, the company attaches great importance to environmental protection and effectively protects the surrounding environment and habitats of wild animals through measures such as waste recycling and drainage testing, achieving a harmonious unity of economic, ecological, and social benefits. The first phase of the Swak Multipurpose Water Conservancy Development Project - the construction of the dam and its ancillary works - has been successfully completed. Next, with the steady progress of the subsequent three phases of the project, it will gradually achieve multiple functions such as power generation, water supply, and irrigation, bringing more comprehensive and long-term benefits to the local community.
