On September 26, 2024, the completion and handover ceremony of the Karuma Hydropower Project in Uganda was held, which was undertaken by China Water Resources and Hydropower Construction Corporation, and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni attended the site and personally unveiled the hydropower station.
At the ceremony, President Museveni expressed his sincere gratitude to the Chinese government and companies for their support in the financing and construction of the Karuma hydropower plant. He stressed that the full completion and handover of the project is a milestone for Uganda's national development, which will provide Uganda with affordable electricity to meet the urgent needs of the country's economic and social development. The Government of Uganda remains committed to the development of electricity infrastructure for the benefit of the population at large.
Chinese Ambassador to Uganda Zhang Lizhong also attended the celebration and pointed out that the opening of the Karuma Hydropower Station is another important achievement of the friendly cooperation between China and Uganda. He said that the hydropower plant will not only bring affordable electricity to thousands of households in Uganda, but also provide power support to Uganda's most dynamic industrial area, promote the country's green economic transformation, and make Uganda a regional power supply hub, providing sustainable and clean energy to Uganda and the entire East African region.
In addition, Ugandan Vice President Alupo, Minister of Energy and Mines South Kabiruwa, and other Ugandan dignitaries, local government officials, and thousands of local people also witnessed this important moment. It is reported that the Karuma Hydropower Station is located about 270 kilometers north of Kampala, the capital of Uganda, with a total installed capacity of up to 600 megawatts, making it the largest hydropower station in Uganda so far.Editor/Jiang Mingyue
