Since 2024, China has made every effort to promote the construction of water conservancy infrastructure, and has started 37 major water conservancy projects including the Yellow River Guxian Water Conservancy Hub Project.
Shang Quanmin, Director of the Water Resources Engineering Construction Department of the Ministry of Water Resources, stated that since 2024, 37 major water conservancy projects have been newly started, covering flood control projects, water supply projects, irrigation projects, and ecological protection and restoration projects, with an investment scale of over 220 billion yuan. They play an important role in ensuring flood control safety, water supply safety, food security, and ecological security.
In terms of ensuring flood control safety, after the completion of the Yellow River Guxian Water Conservancy Hub Project and its joint operation with the Xiaolangdi Reservoir, it can further enhance the Yellow River's water and sediment regulation and water resource storage capacity; The construction of national flood storage and detention area projects such as Xiaoqing River, Dongdian River, and Yongding River has started, accelerating the filling of the gaps in national flood storage and detention area projects and safety facilities, and enhancing the flood control capacity of the basin.
In terms of ensuring water supply safety, the construction of water supply supporting projects such as Shandong Taiping Reservoir, Guangxi Changtang Reservoir, and Qinghai Shujixia Water Conservancy Hub has started. After completion, they will fully utilize the water supply benefits, optimize regional water resource allocation, alleviate regional water resource shortages, and promote economic and social development.
In terms of ensuring food security, large-scale irrigation projects such as Xiajiang Irrigation Area in Jiangxi, Meishan Irrigation Area in Hunan, and Guxian Reservoir Irrigation Area in Henan have started construction this year. These projects are mainly concentrated in the main grain producing areas in central China, and after completion, they can increase or improve irrigation area by nearly 3 million acres.
In terms of ensuring ecological security, the comprehensive management and ecological restoration project of the Chaobai River in Beijing has treated 38 kilometers of the river channel. After the treatment is completed, groundwater replenishment and conservation can be carried out in Miyun, Huairou, Shunyi and other areas of Beijing to enhance groundwater reserve capacity and effectively improve the ecological function of the river channel.
