In a recent plenary session, the Cambodian Cabinet formally approved 23 important projects involving power investment. These projects cover a wide range of energy sectors, including: 12 solar projects, 6 wind projects, 1 biomass and solar combined project, 1 liquefied natural gas project, 1 hydropower project, and 2 energy storage station projects.
Of the 23 projects, 21 are power plant development projects with a total installed capacity of 3,950 MW. In addition, there are two energy storage projects with a capacity of 2,000 megawatts. The projects are expected to be phased in between 2024 and 2029, with a total investment amount of $5.79 billion. The move is aimed at addressing the tight power supply caused by changes in power supply development plans.
The implementation of these power investment projects will greatly enhance the energy security of Cambodia's power supply system. By reducing dependence on external energy sources and increasing the development and utilization of domestic energy resources, in particular by vigorously developing clean energy such as solar, wind, biomass and hydropower, Cambodia will be able to ensure the reliability and economy of electricity supply. In addition, these projects will also generate significant tax revenue for the Cambodian government, including income tax, pre-distributed surtax and withholding tax on dividends distributed during the operation of the projects.
