Recently, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning of Oman officially announced the overall plan for New City Salalah. The total development area of the project is 7.3 square kilometers, with an investment of 3.3 billion Omani riyals (approximately 8.54 billion US dollars). It is one of the core projects of Oman's "2040 Vision" and is planned to start construction within the year.

The project plan includes the construction of 12000 residential units, a 6-kilometer public beach, 200000 square meters of commercial space and cultural facilities, two hospitals, and the creation of a pedestrian friendly community and a multimodal transportation system. Ecological measures include wetland parks, breakwaters, and sustainable urban planning to address the challenges of monsoon climate and rising sea levels.

As part of the Greater Sarala Structure Plan, the project aims to enhance the livability of the city, with an estimated population of 674000 by 2040. In the phased development, 5827 residential units will be built in the first phase, with an investment return rate of 10.2%. The Omani government plans to attract 51 billion riyals in tourism investment through such projects by 2040 and increase the tourism industry's contribution to GDP to 10%.

Currently, with its logistics port and unique natural resources, Sarala has surpassed one million tourists by 2024. After the completion of the new city, it will further consolidate its position as a seaside tourist destination at the hub of Asia, Europe, and Africa.
