Sao Paulo, March 24 (Xinhua) -- The latest data from the Brazilian Solar Photovoltaic Association (Absolar) shows that Brazil's installed solar power capacity has exceeded 55 gigawatts (GW), accounting for 22.2% of the country's electricity structure and becoming the second largest source of energy after hydropower.
In terms of power generation system scale, small and medium-sized photovoltaic systems lead with an installed capacity of 37.6 gigawatts, while large solar power plants account for 17.6 gigawatts. The rapid development of solar energy has helped Brazil reduce approximately 66.6 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions. In the first three months of 2025, over 147000 new photovoltaic systems will be installed nationwide, providing power to 228700 households. Since 2012, the industry has attracted investment of over 25.1 billion reais, created over 1.6 million green jobs, and contributed 78 billion reais in tax revenue.
Currently, over 5500 cities in Brazil have installed distributed photovoltaic systems, and all states have large solar power stations. Minas Gerais state leads with 900000 installed households, followed closely by S ã o Paulo state and Rio Grande do Sul state.
The Brazilian Solar Photovoltaic Association stated that the solar energy industry has become an important pillar of the country's energy transition and will play a greater role in the global green energy market in the future.
