On March 20th, CGN Energy Technology and the Laotian government officially signed a 556MW wind power project development agreement, marking a new stage in the construction of a clean energy base for interconnectivity in the northern part of China and Laos. This project is an important component of the second phase of the base project, forming a multi energy complementary system with the under construction 1000MW photovoltaic project. The overall installed capacity reaches 2556MW, and the estimated annual power generation after completion is 4.5 billion kilowatt hours, making it the largest wind solar integrated base in Southeast Asia.
The first phase of the 1000MW photovoltaic project at the base has started construction in December 2024. The first batch of photovoltaic modules have been installed and will generate approximately 1.7 billion kilowatt hours of electricity annually, which can meet the electricity needs of 10 million households. According to the plan, the clean power generated by the project will be transmitted to the Yunnan power grid through the China Laos 500kV interconnection project, which will not only help Laos build a "Southeast Asian battery" strategy, but also provide an annual cross-border green power supply of 3 billion kilowatt hours to the southwestern region of China.
The head of CGN Southeast Asia stated that the project innovatively adopts an integrated model of "wind solar energy storage and transmission", and the accompanying intelligent dispatch system can stabilize the volatility of renewable energy. According to data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of Laos, after the base is fully operational, it will increase the proportion of clean energy in Laos to 50%, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 3.8 million tons per year, and become a demonstration project for the construction of a China Laos community with a shared future.
