Ed Miliband, the UK Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, officially approved the construction project of the Morna offshore wind farm in Ireland on July 4, 2025. The project is developed by BP and will become the largest offshore wind power facility in the Irish Sea region upon completion.

Project Overview:

Power generation capacity: expected to meet the electricity demand of over 1 million households in the UK

Employment opportunities: Thousands of job positions will be created during the construction period

Strategic significance: Promoting the UK's goal of becoming a 'clean energy superpower'

The UK government has stated that the project is an important component of the Labour government's clean energy plan since taking office one year ago. The total power generation capacity of previously approved clean energy projects can meet the electricity needs of nearly 2 million households, and the addition of the Mona project will further expand this achievement. The project developer BP stated that the project will drive employment opportunities in multiple fields including engineers and operations personnel, and contribute to the revival of the UK manufacturing industry. According to industry forecasts, the offshore wind power industry in the UK will support approximately 100000 direct and indirect jobs by 2030.

Ed Miliband emphasized that the UK government will continue to promote the clean energy revolution by developing projects such as offshore wind, solar, and nuclear power to reduce dependence on external energy and achieve the core goal of "permanently reducing energy bills". At present, the project has entered the preliminary preparation stage, and the related equipment procurement and engineering construction bidding work will be launched gradually. The implementation of this project will further increase the proportion of renewable energy generation in the UK and accelerate the process of energy structure transformation.
