On July 14, 2025, Shanghai Electric's wind power coupled biomass green methanol integration demonstration project in Taonan City, Jilin Province successfully produced green methanol, marking the official commissioning of China's first wind-solar hydrogen coupled biomass to green methanol project. This major breakthrough has filled the technical gap in related fields in China and reached the international advanced level.
The first phase of the 50,000-ton green alcohol project of the project has produced the first batch of products, which will be filled through Shanghai Port to realize the whole process of closed-loop from R&D, production to application. After the project is fully put into operation, it is expected to produce 250,000 tons of green methanol per year, of which 50,000 tons per year in the first phase, and will start the project with an annual output of 200,000 tons of green methanol and 10,000 tons of green aviation coal in the second half of the year.
As one of the first batch of projects in China to meet the requirements of ISCC-EU green certification, the project adopts a number of innovative technologies: through the collection of biomass straw for pretreatment, the use of pure oxygen pressurized biomass gasification, wind power hydrogen production, CO₂ syngas synthesis and other advanced technologies to convert agricultural and forestry waste and wind power into high value-added green methanol on site. The main construction content of the project includes a 2×300 tons/day pure oxygen biomass fluidized bed gasification unit, a 67.2MW wind power system, an 8200Nm³/h hydrogen production unit, a 100,000Nm³ hydrogen storage unit and a 50,000 tons/year green methanol synthesis unit.
It is worth noting that the core technology and key equipment of the project are independently developed and manufactured by Shanghai Electric, and completely independent intellectual property rights have been realized. The project not only opens up a new path for new energy consumption, but also forms a replicable "Shanghai Electric Plan", which provides a demonstration model for the development of hydrogen-based green fuel industry.
The successful commissioning of the project has multiple strategic significance: on the one hand, it promotes the green and low-carbon transformation of energy and helps achieve the "dual carbon" goal; On the other hand, through the efficient use of biomass energy and wind energy, it not only solves the problem of agricultural and forestry waste treatment, but also produces considerable economic benefits, providing a new solution for ensuring national energy security.
