Barcelona Port, an important shipping hub in Europe, recently released its operational report for the first half of 2025. The data shows that the port's container throughput reached 721461 TEUs, a significant increase of 10% compared to the same period in 2024, demonstrating strong development momentum.
Specifically, the export FCL business increased by 8% to 365062 TEUs, while the import FCL business saw a more significant growth of 12%, totaling 356399 TEUs. Of particular note is the outstanding performance of air routes connecting the Asian region, which has become a key factor driving overall growth. The Director of the Port Authority of Barcelona stated in the report, "This achievement fully reflects the resilience of the port's hinterland economy and our operational effectiveness in the international shipping market
In terms of financial performance, the rapid growth of container business has driven the overall operating revenue of the port to 101 million euros, a year-on-year increase of 4%. The liquid bulk cargo sector also performed well, with a total transportation volume of 8.25 million tons, a significant increase of 22.1% year-on-year, mainly due to the active trade of gasoline and liquefied natural gas.

However, the report also shows a decline in some businesses. The total volume of new car transportation decreased by 6.5% year-on-year to 362951 vehicles, but the import of new cars and the transportation volume along the sea achieved growth of 7% and 11% respectively. The multimodal transport business remains stable, with a total of 218237 transportation tasks completed in the first half of the year. Overall, the total cargo throughput of the port in the first half of 2025 was 34.68 million tons, a slight decrease of 3.2% compared to the same period last year.
To consolidate and enhance competitive advantages, the Barcelona Port Management Committee recently approved four important development strategy agreements, covering key areas such as logistics system optimization, infrastructure modernization, and green and sustainable operation. These measures will further strengthen the strategic position of the port as a core shipping hub in the Mediterranean region, injecting new impetus into its future development.
Industry insiders believe that in the context of changes in the global trade pattern, Barcelona Port can achieve sustained growth in container business, especially with the outstanding performance of Asian routes, reflecting the increasing importance of the port in the international shipping network. In the future, with the implementation of various upgrading and renovation projects, the port is expected to play a more important role in the shipping market in southern Europe.
