Against the backdrop of accelerating global energy transition, China Energy Engineering Group (CEEC) has officially announced a major overseas investment plan: investing $1 billion in Egypt over the next five years, focusing on renewable energy, seawater desalination, and energy storage. This move will further deepen the strategic cooperation between China and Egypt in the energy sector.In September 2025, during the SCO summit in Tianjin, Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly met with Ni Zhen, Chairman of China Energy Engineering Corporation (CEEC), and the two sides reached a consensus on strengthening cooperation in clean energy. Egypt plans to increase the proportion of renewable energy to 42% by 2030 and significantly increase seawater desalination capacity from the current 1.4 million cubic meters/day to 10 million cubic meters/day. CEEC's investment plan is highly aligned with Egypt's national strategy.

Since entering the Egyptian market in 2009, CEEC has completed 14 energy and infrastructure projects.Recently, the company also relocated its North Africa and Middle East regional headquarters to Cairo, demonstrating its long-term commitment to the Egyptian market. This investment will focus on three key areas: first, renewable energy projects to meet Egypt's domestic electricity demand of 5-6 gigawatts per year and explore the potential for energy exports to Europe; second, seawater desalination facilities to help alleviate Egypt's water scarcity; and third, energy storage systems to improve grid stability and renewable energy absorption.

The Egyptian government has pledged to provide China Energy Engineering Corporation with the necessary policy support and incentives to promote the localization of renewable energy equipment production.This collaboration will also solidify China's leading position in Egypt's new energy market. Currently, Egypt is becoming a hotspot for global investors in the green energy sector, with companies from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and other countries actively expanding into the local market.

China Energy Engineering Group's investment will not only promote the development of Egypt's clean energy industry but also enhance Egypt's energy autonomy through technology transfer and localized production. The establishment of the Cairo regional headquarters further highlights Egypt's important role as a hub for Chinese companies entering the North African and Middle Eastern markets.With the advancement of this investment plan, China Energy Engineering Corporation (CEEC) is expected to build exemplary green energy projects in Egypt and even the entire North African region, bringing multiple benefits such as clean electricity, freshwater supply, and energy storage technologies to the local area.
