On September 16, 2025, the key cross provincial transmission project in China's 14th Five Year Plan - the ± 800 kV High Voltage Direct Current Transmission Project from Southeast Tibet to the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area (referred to as the "Tibet Guangdong DC Project") - officially held a construction mobilization meeting, marking the comprehensive launch of the world's strongest transmission capacity, most advanced technology, and largest investment scale flexible DC transmission project.

The project starts in Xizang, passes through Yunnan and Guangxi, and finally connects to Guangdong, with a total length of 2681 kilometers. It is expected that by 2029, after the full line is put into operation, more than 43 billion kilowatt hours of clean electricity can be transmitted annually to the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area, all from renewable energy sources. This scale of electricity is equivalent to about half of the annual power generation of the Three Gorges Dam.

Long distance transmission of green power from Xizang to Guangdong faces many world-class challenges. The project needs to cross three geographical steps, namely, the Qinghai Tibet Plateau, the the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and the hills of South China. Nearly 90% of the whole line passes through mountainous terrain, which is extremely difficult to construct. But while overcoming these challenges, it also means that the Tibet Guangdong DC project will create multiple global records in the field of power transmission. Although the technology involved is extremely complex, the ultimate transmission efficiency is amazing - it takes only 9 milliseconds (0.009 seconds) for green power to be transmitted from Xizang to Guangdong, truly realizing "lightning power transmission".

This mega project has significant strategic importance. Xizang is rich in clean energy resources such as water, wind and light, while the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area is economically developed and has strong demand for electricity. The Tibet Guangdong DC project is like an energy "artery", closely combining the resource endowment of the west with the power demand of the east, which not only promotes Xizang to transform its energy advantages into economic advantages, but also provides a solid guarantee for the energy security of the Greater Bay Area.

Moreover, Xizang's clean electricity will be delivered to more than ten provinces in 2024. It can be said that among the lights of thousands of households, there may be power generated by melting water from Xizang's snow mountains.
