The Baltica railway project, which connects the Baltic States and Poland, has made significant progress recently. This standard gauge railway line with a designed speed of 250 kilometers per hour is accelerating its construction process through a series of newly signed contracts and further injection of EU funds, demonstrating Europe's firm commitment to strengthening regional connectivity and strategic security.

In Lithuania, LTG Infra, responsible for implementing the project, signed two key construction contracts with a total value of 375.8 million euros. This move aims to significantly extend the active construction section within Lithuania to 114 kilometers, marking a new era of large-scale physical engineering construction for the project. Among them, Kauno Tiltai has been awarded a contract worth 248.9 million euros to construct a 24.4-kilometer railway subgrade and supporting engineering structure. The project located between Ramigallia and Belchua is quite complex, including the construction of 8 bridges, 3 elevated bridges, 2 animal passages, and 1 green bridge. At the same time, 4 public roads need to be rebuilt, reflecting the project's comprehensive consideration of ecological protection and community integration while promoting modern transportation.

Another contractor, Hisk, has won a contract worth 126.9 million euros to construct a 12.3-kilometer line between Belchone and Yoniskilles. The project includes dams, three elevated bridges, one bridge, 19 culverts and animal crossings, as well as over one kilometer of sound barriers. It is worth noting that this is the third railway Baltica contract obtained by Hisk Company in Lithuania, reflecting the continuity of project execution and the continued recognition of qualified contractor capabilities.

To commemorate this milestone, the Lithuanian Ministry of Transport and Communications and LTG Group jointly installed a symbolic project signboard near Panevizhos. Lithuanian Transport Minister Yulas Taminskas emphasized at the ceremony that the project not only concerns transportation convenience, but also has profound strategic significance for regional connectivity and safety. The CEO of LTG Group, Egidius Lazauskas, revealed that the total value of railway Baltica related contracts signed in 2025 alone has exceeded 800 million euros, which clearly indicates the strong development momentum of Lithuania's transportation infrastructure sector. Our investment will double compared to last year, mainly from European funds, "he added." As the project between Kaunas and Panevierz intensifies, we expect investment to further increase

In terms of financial security, the EU has provided strong and sustained support for the project through the 'Connect Europe Fund'. Recently, after a high-level project progress review held in Vilnius, RB Rail, the central coordinating body of Rail Baltica, signed a new funding agreement to receive an additional 295.5 million euros in EU funding. This funding will be allocated to three Baltic countries: Estonia will receive 47.1 million euros, Latvia will receive 153.5 million euros, and Lithuania will receive 94.9 million euros.

For Lithuania, this EU funding will mainly be used to promote the construction of the key node - the Kaunas urban node, including necessary overpasses and railway crossing projects. At the same time, it will also support the deepening of technical design and land acquisition work for the Kaunas to Poland border section. These measures have laid a solid foundation for ensuring that the project extends to the Polish border as planned. Keywords: foreign construction news, international news

Overall, with the successive implementation of major construction contracts and the continuous injection of EU funds, the railway Baltica project is accelerating from blueprint to reality. It will not only reshape the transportation pattern in the Baltic region, significantly reducing travel time, but also enhance the economic resilience and strategic synergy of the entire EU by closely connecting Central and Eastern Europe.Editor/Cheng Liting
