Recently, the main project of the national "14th Five Year Plan" key energy project - Jiangxi Ganxian Pumped Storage Power Station held a groundbreaking ceremony in Dabu Township, Ganxian District, Ganzhou City. With the roar of construction machinery and equipment, this energy hub with a total investment of 7.855 billion yuan has officially entered the full construction stage, injecting new momentum into the upgrading of Jiangxi's power grid and green and low-carbon development.

The Ganxian Pumped Storage Power Station is located in Dabu Township, Ganxian District, and belongs to the first-class large (I) type water conservancy and energy project. The planned total installed capacity is 1.2 million kilowatts, and a total of 4 reversible water turbine generators with a single capacity of 300000 kilowatts will be installed. The project consists of two main parts: the core hub and supporting facilities. The core hub includes an upper reservoir, a lower reservoir, a water diversion and power generation system, and an underground powerhouse. The upper reservoir dam is designed with a concrete gravity dam, with a maximum height of 68 meters and a total storage capacity of 19.86 million cubic meters. The lower reservoir is built on natural valley terrain, forming a 362 meter natural water level difference with the upper reservoir, providing sufficient potential energy for efficient power generation; The underground factory building is located inside the mountain between two warehouses, with a total length of over 1200 meters. Core equipment such as generator sets and main transformers will be centrally arranged to achieve energy conversion and power output. The supporting facilities include ground switch stations, construction access roads, water and power supply systems, and ecological protection projects, providing comprehensive support for project construction and operation.

The total construction period of the project is 57 months, and the plan is to advance the construction in stages: from 2025 to 2027, the focus will be on completing the pouring of the upper and lower reservoir dams, excavation of the diversion tunnel, and the main construction of the underground powerhouse; Start the installation and commissioning of generator sets in 2028; The first unit will be officially put into operation for power generation in December 2029, and all units will be connected to the grid for operation by July 2030. During the construction process, the construction unit will adopt intelligent construction technology, using equipment such as tunnel boring machines and dam intelligent rolling systems to improve project efficiency. At the same time, ecological protection requirements will be strictly implemented, and measures such as slope greening, soil and water conservation, sewage treatment and recycling will be implemented for ecologically sensitive points such as mountainous vegetation and surface water bodies in the project area to ensure the coordinated promotion of project construction and ecological protection.

As an important peak shaving and valley filling power source in Jiangxi power grid, the power station is expected to generate 1.296 billion kilowatt hours of electricity annually and 1.728 billion kilowatt hours of pumped water annually after completion. It can effectively solve the problem of "large output fluctuations and difficult consumption" of new energy such as wind power and photovoltaic in Jiangxi power grid. According to calculations, the project can save 428000 tons of standard coal and reduce 1066800 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. At the same time, it has frequency and phase modulation, emergency backup, and black start functions, which will greatly improve the stability and power supply reliability of Jiangxi power grid.

From the perspective of regional development, the project construction period will directly create over 1500 temporary employment positions, driving the development of local supporting industries such as building materials procurement, transportation, accommodation and catering, while improving regional transportation, water conservancy and other infrastructure conditions. After the operation of the power station, it will also contribute to the revitalization of rural areas and the development of green industries in Ganxian District through ecological tourism development and rational utilization of water resources in the reservoir area.

The relevant person in charge of Jiangxi Provincial Energy Bureau stated that the Ganxian Pumped Storage Power Station is a key project for Jiangxi to build a new integrated power system of "source grid load storage". After its completion, it will complement the pumped storage power stations already built or under construction in the province, further optimize the energy structure, and provide solid support for Jiangxi to build a national ecological civilization pilot zone and achieve the "dual carbon" goal. At present, all preliminary preparations for the project have been completed, and the construction team has entered the site.
