Recently, MVV, a German energy company, announced a major energy project to build the world's largest river water source heat pump system within the Mannheim Thermal Power Plant. This breakthrough project marks significant progress in the field of renewable energy utilization and sets a new benchmark for global clean heating technology.

The heating capacity of this project reaches 185MWt, and it is planned to install two water source heat pump units with a single capacity of 82.5MWt. Innovatively utilizing the Rhine River water as a heat source and using environmentally friendly natural refrigerant isobutane (R600a), it can generate a high temperature of 130 ℃, fully meeting the needs of urban centralized heating. The total investment of the project is 200 million euros, with an expected construction period of two years. After completion, it will provide clean and efficient heating services for about 40000 households.

The implementation of this project is an important achievement of MVV Company's continued deep cultivation in the field of river water source heat pumps. In 2023, the company completed the Mannheim Phase I project with a heating capacity of 20MWt in the same factory area, which was once the largest river water source heat pump in Germany. In contrast, the scale of the second phase project is more than 9 times that of the first phase, fully demonstrating the rapid development and mature application of this technology.

Water source heat pump technology has been widely applied worldwide, and China has accumulated rich experience in this field. The reliability and practicality of this technology have been demonstrated from the 2010 Shanghai World Expo Jiangshui source heat pump project to the Yangtze River source heat pump systems in Hankou Binjiang Business District and the central area of Nanjing Jiangbei New Area. Especially the Qingdao Guzhen Kou Sea Water Source Heat Pump Project, which is currently the largest water source heat pump system built in the world. The advancement of this project will not only significantly increase the proportion of clean energy heating in the Mannheim region, but also provide important reference for promoting renewable energy heating technology worldwide. With the continuous advancement of global carbon neutrality goals, such large-scale clean energy projects will play an increasingly important role in the future energy system, making positive contributions to promoting energy transition and addressing climate change.
