Recently, shipping giant Maersk officially confirmed the order for 12 18000 TEU liquefied natural gas dual fuel ultra large container ships to be exclusively built by New Era Shipbuilding, with a total contract value of approximately 16.5 billion yuan. This batch of new ships is scheduled to be delivered between 2028 and 2029, with a single ship cost of approximately 193 million US dollars, which has a significant price advantage among similar ship types.
The achievement of this order fully demonstrates the competitiveness of Chinese shipbuilding enterprises in the international market. In this bidding process, New Era Shipbuilding stood out from many well-known shipbuilding companies including China and South Korea with competitive quotations. According to industry insiders' analysis, the single ship cost of Chinese shipping companies is 20-30 million US dollars lower than their Korean counterparts, which is particularly significant for bulk orders.

Since 2025, despite the overall decline in global new ship orders, the container ship market has remained active. Data shows that in the first three quarters, the number of new container ship orders reached 413, with a total of 3.3 million TEUs, which is more than twice the average level of the past 10 years. As of now, Chinese shipping companies have a market share of 74% in global container ship orders, demonstrating an absolute advantage in this field.
Maersk's large-scale investment in dual fuel vessels is in line with its sustainable development goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2040. As the world's second-largest shipping company, Maersk plans to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions intensity of its ocean going fleet by 50% by 2030. This order is also Maersk's second LNG dual fuel container ship order in the new era of shipbuilding, further consolidating the cooperation between the two parties. This acquisition of Maersk Line's large order not only enhances the international influence of China's shipbuilding industry, but also injects new impetus into the global shipping industry's green transformation.
