Recently, Matola Port in Mozambique has reached an important development milestone - the first phase of the expansion project of the dry bulk cargo terminal has been officially launched by the Gerrod Logistics Group. At the groundbreaking ceremony, Jo ã o Georges Matolombe, the Minister of Transport and Logistics of Mozambique, personally launched the first phase of development work in the area behind the dock, marking the substantive construction stage of this strategic project aimed at strengthening the country's regional logistics hub position.

The background of this expansion plan is far-reaching. Since taking over the operation of the terminal in 2007, Gerrod Corporation has invested a total of $52 million in facility modernization and technological upgrades. Recently, the group has increased its investment commitment by acquiring the remaining 35% stake in the terminal and extending the secondary franchise agreement until 2058.
The core goal of the first phase of the project launched this time is to significantly increase the annual throughput of the terminal from the current 8 million tons to 12 million tons by achieving comprehensive mechanization in the rear area. At the same time, the site area will be expanded from 40800 square meters to 157760 square meters. This phase is expected to be completed in the first half of 2027. The second phase of the project, which will follow closely, will focus on increasing storage and loading facilities, integrating the front-end and back-end operation processes of the terminal, and ultimately increasing the annual throughput capacity to 15 million tons.
Minister Matolombe emphasized at the ceremony, "Today, we will translate our vision into action, translate action into tangible results, and benefit our country and the entire Southern African Development Community region." He pointed out that this expansion not only strengthens the logistics capacity of the Maputo Corridor, but also consolidates Mozambique's key position as a regional logistics hub through close cooperation between the government and the private sector.
Kuwazi Mabaso, the incoming CEO of Gerrod Corporation, added, "With modern infrastructure and integrated systems, Matola Port is fully prepared to meet the growing regional demand and promote trade between Africa and countries around the world

This series of upgrading measures will significantly enhance the comprehensive competitiveness of Mozambique ports and inject new impetus into the smooth trade and economic development of southern Africa.Editor/Cheng Liting
