On January 2, 2026, the Shenzhen Engineering Construction Headquarters of China Railway Guangzhou Group issued a document announcing the successful completion of the ground-level railway project for the Shenzhen Pinghu South Comprehensive Logistics Hub, the largest single comprehensive logistics hub in China. This marks that the core transportation function of the project has officially met the conditions for opening, and this super project, which affects the logistics landscape of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, has achieved a key breakthrough.

As one of the first 23 national logistics hubs in China, the Shenzhen Pinghu South Comprehensive Logistics Hub was designed and constructed with ingenuity by China Railway Construction Corporation. With a grand scale of 1.11 million square meters, it pioneers a new three-dimensional development model featuring "underground railway running through, intelligent warehousing on the upper level, and surrounding road network", organically integrating railway, highway, and maritime transportation functions to build an interconnected super logistics platform. The recently completed ground-level railway project can be called the "steel artery" of the hub's operation. The construction team tackled difficulties on the basis of the existing railway freight yard, newly building and renovating a total length of about 4.6 kilometers of railway lines, including key routes such as arrival-departure tracks, shunting tracks, and container operation tracks. Through intelligent dispatching systems and modular construction techniques, efficient coordination between construction and existing railway operations was achieved.

"The upgraded ground-level railway can support multiple trains receiving and departing simultaneously, significantly improving logistics turnover efficiency," said Sun Zheng, Chief Engineer of the China Railway Construction Corporation project. The line will become an important high-speed rail express node within the hub, seamlessly connecting backbone lines such as the Hangzhou-Shenzhen Railway and the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Railway. In its initial stage, it can undertake the task of railway collection and distribution of over 600,000 TEUs per year. It is noteworthy that the project innovatively adopts the "three-dimensional composite development above railway freight yards" model, achieving seamless connection between warehousing and transshipment through a multi-layered three-dimensional transportation network, saving up to 42% of land, and providing a "Shenzhen model" for the efficient development of urban logistics.

According to the plan, upon the comprehensive completion of the project, it is expected that the cargo throughput will exceed 30 million tons by 2035. It will not only become the largest single railway logistics center in China, but also leap to become the largest single-scale multimodal transportation center in Asia, integrating rail, road, and sea transportation. By then, the Shenzhen Pinghu South Comprehensive Logistics Hub will undertake the sea-rail intermodal transportation task of approximately 1.4 million TEUs for Shenzhen, driving a 30% increase in regional logistics efficiency and a 20% reduction in costs. This will further enhance the logistics connectivity between the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the regions jointly participating in the Belt and Road Initiative, injecting strong momentum into Shenzhen's efforts to build a global logistics hub city and promote coordinated development of regional industries.Editor/Bian Wenjun
