With the accelerated update of the energy system in Central Asia, Uzbekistan's energy sector will usher in an important cooperation on February 5, 2026. Uzbekistan Hydrogen Energy Co., Ltd. has officially signed a cooperation agreement with the well-known Chinese energy enterprise TBEA in the capital city of Tashkent, to jointly launch the modernization and renovation project of three cascade hydropower stations located in the Lower Bozsuv Waterfall area of Tashkent, namely HPP-19, HPP-22, and HPP-23. This measure marks a crucial step forward for Uzbekistan in modernizing its existing hydropower assets and optimizing its energy structure, and is also another important practice of China's hydropower technology and engineering solutions in Central Asia.

Three power stations start modernization renovation

This cooperation focuses on three strategically significant hydropower stations. These power stations are all located within the Bozsov cascade hydropower system around the capital Tashkent, which is an important infrastructure to ensure local power supply. According to the agreement signed by both parties, TBEA will be primarily responsible for providing advanced equipment, control systems, and technical solutions to comprehensively modernize and upgrade these three early built hydropower stations with limited installed capacity and operational efficiency that needs to be improved. The scope of cooperation covers the updating and optimization of generator sets, automation control systems, supporting electrical equipment, and related technical infrastructure, aiming to systematically improve the overall operation level, reliability, and safety of the power station.

Unleashing the potential for increased efficiency of existing hydropower

Against the backdrop of increasing energy demand and dual pressures of energy conservation and emission reduction, Uzbekistan has chosen to obtain reliable clean energy increments at relatively low costs through technological upgrades of existing hydropower facilities, which is seen as a pragmatic path that balances economy and security. The core goal of this renovation project is to fully tap into the potential of these existing assets. After the completion of the project, the total installed capacity of the three power stations is expected to increase from the existing 27.4 MW to 32.4 MW, a net increase of 5 MW. The annual power generation is expected to increase by about 52.8 million kilowatt hours, which is sufficient to meet the annual electricity demand of about 21000 households. In addition, the project will bring significant environmental benefits, expected to help save approximately 17 million cubic feet of natural gas and over 40000 tons of coal consumption annually, strongly supporting Uzbekistan's energy transition and emission reduction commitments. Deepen international cooperation and regional synergy

This hydropower station renovation project is not only a simple technological upgrade, but also a concrete manifestation of Uzbekistan's deepening international energy cooperation and integration into the regional green development pattern. For TBEA, this project is an important continuation of its continuous layout in the energy infrastructure field in Central Asia and the export of Chinese technology and engineering standards, which helps to consolidate and expand its influence in the regional market. For Uzbekistan, introducing advanced international technology and management experience is a key measure to improve the country's energy industry technology level, optimize the energy structure dominated by natural gas, and enhance the stability of the power system. The successful implementation of this project will provide useful reference for Uzbekistan and even the entire Central Asian region to promote the modernization of energy infrastructure, promote regional energy coordination and sustainable development through international cooperation.Editor/Gao Xue
