On March 5, 2026, the President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Makoto Kanda, met with Tajikistan's President Emomali Rahmon and reiterated ADB's support for the country to achieve sustainable, diversified, and inclusive economic growth, and create more high-quality employment opportunities.

Shinobu Kanda stated that the Asian Development Bank plans to provide approximately $1.1 billion in aid to Tajikistan between 2026 and 2028, with a focus on supporting infrastructure development, enhancing economic competitiveness, improving the quality and accessibility of social services, and supporting the development of the private sector as a core driver of employment, innovation, and sustainable growth.

During the meeting with Tajikistan's First Deputy Prime Minister, Khokim Holykzada, Shinobu Kanda reiterated that the Asian Development Bank will deepen its partnership with the country. During the visit, both sides also jointly launched the Asian Development Bank's 2026-2030 New Country Partnership Strategy, focusing on sustainable infrastructure, competitiveness enhancement, and inclusive social service expansion.

Shinobu Kanda also visited the Dushanbe Modern Vocational Training Center supported by the Asian Development Bank. Given that over half of Tajikistan's population is under the age of 25, these training centers (six in total nationwide, jointly funded by the Asian Development Bank and the Japan Information and Communication Technology Foundation) assist local youth and adults in mastering vocational skills in key areas such as agriculture and green energy.

Since Tajikistan joined the Asian Development Bank in 1998, the bank has provided approximately $3 billion in development assistance, becoming one of the country's largest multilateral partners, helping it achieve multiple achievements such as modernizing roads, upgrading irrigation and water supply systems, constructing hospitals and schools, and repairing power facilities.

The Asian Development Bank was founded in 1966 and has 69 member countries (50 of which are from the Asia Pacific region). It is a leading multilateral development bank that promotes inclusive, resilient, and sustainable growth in the Asia Pacific region.
