When the roar of heavy excavation equipment breaks the silence of the border mountains in Kyrgyzstan, a cross-border passage carrying the dream of trade and connectivity has officially entered the most crucial stage of tackling the challenge.

Recently, the Balsikun Bedel Highway project, which connects Balsikun Village on the south bank of Lake Issyk Kul with the Bedel Port on the Chinese border, has completed all exploration and fully started tunnel construction. At the construction sites of the two planned tunnels, there is already a busy scene: in Tunnel 1, professionals and large equipment are working together and have successfully excavated 15 meters forward; Tunnel 2 is also advancing synchronously. This marks that this strategic project, with a total investment of about 350 million US dollars (including 60% of China's aid) and a total length of about 150 kilometers, is accelerating from blueprint to reality. It is not only a road, but also a key project that deeply connects the economic bloodlines of the two countries. It is expected that after completion by the end of 2028, the travel time between the two places will be reduced from 8 hours to 4 hours, with an annual capacity of 1.5 million vehicles, completely reshaping the regional transportation pattern.

The primary challenge facing the project is the towering mountain range that lies ahead. The entire highway requires the excavation of a 12 kilometer tunnel, divided into three sections for construction, and the installation of over 30 bridges. The project adopts advanced Chinese tunnel technology and is designed according to the 8-level seismic standard to cope with complex geological conditions and seismic zone risks. At present, the contractor has completed the construction of the concrete factory, with equipment and personnel in place. With scientific management and exquisite craftsmanship, they are pushing forward inch by inch to ensure the durability of this "steel vessel".

This highway is a key cooperation project between the two countries, reflecting profound cooperation sincerity and a win-win model. The project funds are provided by China with 60% preferential loan assistance and supported by Kyrgyzstan with 40%, jointly ensuring the smooth implementation of the project. This is not only an investment of funds, but also a systematic output of China's infrastructure construction technology, equipment, and management experience. The project is expected to directly create about 500 job opportunities for the local area during the construction period, truly realizing the goal of "building one project, benefiting the people's livelihood".

The strategic value of this highway will be fully unleashed after its opening. It will become the most efficient land route connecting Xinjiang, China with the Issyk Kul region of Kyrgyzstan.
