On April 4, 2026, in Xiangshan, Ningbo, Zhejiang, with the official pouring of the first tank of concrete for the nuclear island, the construction of Unit 2 of the Jinqimen Nuclear Power Project entered the main construction phase. This is not only a breakthrough in the engineering node, but also another milestone in the mass construction of China's independent third-generation nuclear power technology "Hualong One".

As a national business card of China with complete independent intellectual property rights in nuclear power, the number of units under construction and operation of "Hualong One" currently ranks first in the world, representing the forefront of world nuclear energy technology. The second unit that started pouring this time, together with the first unit constructed at the same time, constitutes the first phase of the project, which is controlled by China Nuclear Power Investment, a subsidiary of China National Nuclear Corporation. According to the plan, these two million kilowatt pressurized water reactor units will be put into operation for power generation in 2030 and 2031 respectively.

The strategic ambition of the Jinqimen nuclear power project goes beyond this. The overall plan for the project is to construct six "Hualong One" nuclear power units. After completion, the annual power generation will reach 55 billion kilowatt hours. Behind this number is a huge green momentum: it can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 45 million tons per year, which is equivalent to planting a vast virtual forest in the Yangtze River Delta region. Under the dual pressure of ensuring energy supply and low-carbon transformation, the Jinqimen project will become a key clean energy base in Zhejiang Province and the Yangtze River Delta region. It can not only effectively alleviate the regional power shortage, but also provide solid "nuclear" power support for optimizing the energy structure and achieving the dual carbon goals.Editor/Cheng Liting
