At the beginning of 2026, a blueprint for power grid investment with a total amount exceeding five trillion yuan was released from the national energy regulatory department. As the water turbines of the Yalong River and the offshore wind turbines of the Yangjiang River rotate day and night, a new energy generation that replaces coal-fired power with wind and solar power is quietly unfolding on the land of China.

Wind and solar power doubling rewrites the power supply landscape

During the 15th Five Year Plan period, the ten-year doubling action for non fossil energy has been fully launched, with an average annual increase of 200 million kilowatts in wind and solar installed capacity. By 2030, the proportion of new energy generation will exceed half of the total. The Yalong River base provides 200 billion kilowatt hours of clean electricity annually, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of the entire Beijing city; The annual power generation of Guangdong Yangjiang Deep Sea Breeze Field exceeds 50 billion kilowatt hours, covering nearly 40 million households.

Five trillion yuan transmission backbone network

In the first three months of 2026, the investment in the power grid exceeded 160 billion yuan, and the Anhui Hubei DC mutual aid project broke ground first. Fifteen ultra-high voltage direct current lines will be put into operation in the next five years, and the capacity of West East power transmission will soar to 420 million kilowatts. These power expressways will transfer the wind in Xinjiang, the light in Xizang, and the water in Sichuan to the load center instantaneously, and resolve the resource mismatch between the east and the west. Coal and electricity collaborate to safeguard safety bottom

Fossil energy is not about retirement, but about rejuvenation. The Huadian Chongqing Tongnan gas turbine project has broken the domestic record with a combined cycle efficiency of over 61%, reducing carbon emissions by over 800000 tons annually. During the 15th Five Year Plan period, coal-fired power units will be equipped with carbon capture devices to complement peak shaving with new energy. When the wind encounters extreme cold and no wind, the traditional units that have been cleaned and renovated serve as the foundation for the power system.Editor/Gao Xue
