On June 9, 2026, Riyadh witnessed a handshake that could reshape the geopolitical and economic landscape of the Middle East. Under the dual narrative of the old dream of the Ottoman Empire and modern energy security, Saudi Transport Minister Saleh Jasser and Türkiye Transport Minister Abdulkadir Ulaloglu jointly signed two heavy memorandums of understanding on railway and logistics. This is not just a diplomatic ceremony, but also a modern awakening of a century old steel artery - the Han Zhi Railway.

The Rebirth Plan of the Century old Railway

The core of this cooperation lies in the retrospective and reconstruction of history. Both sides are targeting the Hanzhi Railway, which was built in 1900 and once stretched 1320 kilometers.

Although this former imperial project is now broken, in the eyes of Türkiye's engineers, it is still the shortest path to connect Anatolia and the Arabian Peninsula. According to the agreement, Türkiye will use its rich railway construction experience to assist Saudi Arabia in modernizing existing lines, covering the whole chain technology transfer from signal system digitization to reducing environmental impact. Minister Uraloglu confidently stated that the previous two successful cross-border trial runs have proven the feasibility of this ancient route.

The land corridor that bypasses the eye of the storm

The deeper driving force comes from geopolitical anxiety. Faced with the long-standing risk of blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, Saudi Arabia and its Gulf allies are eager to find alternative solutions.

The new planning blueprint shows that this channel will no longer be limited to bilateral, but a huge regional network: it will connect the railway network of Türkiye and Europe, through Aleppo and Damascus in Syria, through Amman in Jordan, and finally into the hinterland of Saudi Arabia and even the Red Sea port of Aqaba. This is a land bridge attempting to connect the Mediterranean with the Arabian Peninsula, aimed at ensuring that goods can still flow freely through the railway tracks in the event of a sea transportation interruption.

The New Chess Game of Regional Connectivity

For China, this trend provides a new perspective for observing regional interconnectivity. Keywords: Infrastructure Engineering News Network, Railway Infrastructure

Although the project is mainly led by regional countries, the "Gulf Türkiye Europe" land route constructed by the project objectively echoes the westward extension of the Silk Road Economic Belt. With countries such as the United Arab Emirates actively laying out the Jordan railway network, a railway centered infrastructure competition is underway in the Middle East. This is not only a challenge to the traditional shipping model, but also a manifestation of regional countries seeking strategic autonomy and diversification in the great power game. The future logistics map of the Middle East may be completely rewritten as a result.Editor/Gao Xue
