On June 16, 2026, in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, the handshake between the leaders of China and Myanmar injected new vitality into a long dormant steel artery. With Min Aung Hlaing's first visit to China after taking office as president, the two sides unusually reiterated railway cooperation in a joint statement, pushing the Mu Jie to Mandalay railway project to the forefront again. This is not only an update of diplomatic rhetoric, but also a key confirmation of the direction of the western line of the Pan Asian Railway.

President's visit to China sets the tone for cooperation
The joint statement clearly states that both sides agree to promote the construction of the China Myanmar Economic Corridor and steadily advance major projects such as the Jiaoyu Deep Water Port and the Muse Mandalay Railway. This statement implies that the project has evolved from a mere feasibility study to a strategic consensus at the national level, clearing political barriers for subsequent substantive construction.

Key link of the Pan Asian Western Route
The China Myanmar Railway has a total length of about 1920 kilometers and is a strategic passage connecting Kunming, Yunnan, China with the Indian Ocean deep-water port in Myanmar. Among them, the section from Mujie to Mandalay in Myanmar has a total length of 431 kilometers and a designed speed of 160 kilometers per hour. This project is regarded as the core project of the western route of the Pan Asian Railway. Once completed, it will provide China with a direct seaport that avoids the Strait of Malacca, greatly changing the logistics pattern of the region. Multi party linkage accelerates progress
With the successive landing of the China Laos Railway and the China Vietnam Railway, the railway interconnection between China and surrounding countries has entered the fast lane. Myanmar has established a dedicated project guidance committee by the end of 2025, demonstrating a strong willingness to advance. Within Chinese territory, the Dali Ruili section is expected to open in 2028, and the full completion of the China Myanmar railway is accelerating from blueprint to reality.Editor/Gao Xue
