When the largest uranium resource treasure trove in Central Asia meets China's mature nuclear power technology, a strategic cooperation related to the future of clean energy officially begins. Recently, China and Kazakhstan held the first joint working group meeting on civil nuclear energy cooperation and signed a cooperation agreement, marking the official expansion of their energy strategic cooperation to the civil nuclear power track and the entry of cross-border clean energy cooperation into a new stage.

This meeting was co chaired by Almasadam Satkalyev, Chairman of the Kazakhstan Atomic Energy Agency, and Wang Hongzhi, Director of the China National Energy Agency. It was the first meeting of the China Kazakhstan Civil Nuclear Energy Special Working Group. At the meeting, both sides had in-depth exchanges on the core issue of peaceful use of nuclear energy, finalized departmental coordination mechanisms, and confirmed a two-way cooperation path for deepening nuclear energy development and technology implementation. After the meeting, both sides officially signed a special agreement, clarifying the implementation measures, outlining the development direction and key issues of medium - and long-term civil nuclear energy cooperation, and laying the institutional foundation for practical promotion in the future.

Central Asia's energy transformation accelerates, highlighting the value of the nuclear power track

Kazakhstan possesses globally leading high-quality uranium resources and is one of the core uranium producing countries in the world. It is accelerating the diversification of its energy structure, reducing its dependence on fossil fuels, and actively laying out its domestic civilian nuclear power system. The low-carbon energy consumption control in the Central Asian region is becoming increasingly strict, and countries are expanding safe and controllable clean energy categories. Nuclear power has become an important option due to its stable, efficient, and low-carbon characteristics. Based on the long-term energy cooperation foundation between China and Kazakhstan in the fields of oil and gas, wind and solar energy, civil nuclear energy is becoming a new incremental sector of energy cooperation between the two countries, and the compliant and peaceful use of nuclear energy has a strong foundation and practical conditions for implementation.

Bi directional collaborative empowerment, improving the cross-border energy cooperation landscape

This cooperation is based on a long-term mutually beneficial layout. Kazakhstan relies on its own uranium resource endowment to supply industrial raw materials, while China exports full chain technology and compliance experience in nuclear power operation and development. Both sides complement each other's advantages and work together. At the same time, both parties will establish a normalized mechanism for government enterprise collaboration, effectively breaking down barriers to cross departmental cooperation and ensuring efficient progress of cooperation. The implementation of this agreement not only improves China's layout of the nuclear energy industry in Central Asia and facilitates the export of nuclear power technology, but also helps Kazakhstan improve its local nuclear industry system and consolidate its voice in the regional clean energy field, opening up broader space for energy cooperation between the two countries.
