MRCB recently announced its entry into the field of digital infrastructure and plans to build an artificial intelligence data center in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, with a development cost of approximately RM2.1 billion.

The project is jointly developed by its wholly-owned subsidiary, Bukit Jalil Central Industries, and Perintis Akal Private Limited. MRCB serves as the asset holder and general developer, while Perintis Akal is responsible for long-term leasing and operation. This is a landmark step in MRCB's transition from traditional energy and real estate to the digital track.

65 MW IT load targeting AI computing power needs

The data center covers an area of approximately 37320 square meters, with a total construction area of approximately 500000 square feet. It is expected to carry 65 megawatts of IT load and is designed specifically for the needs of artificial intelligence computing. The project will be built according to the international Uptime Institute Tier III standard, equipped with high-density power and cooling systems to support advanced AI computing platforms.

Perintis Akal will collaborate with Inspur Communication Malaysia to be responsible for project construction, operation, and maintenance. Since 2026, Malaysia's AI infrastructure construction has significantly accelerated. The government has clearly stated in the digital economy blueprint that Malaysia will be developed into a regional data center hub, with Bukit Jalil as the core area of southern Kuala Lumpur, with outstanding advantages in land and electricity matching. MRCB's decision to settle here is not only a business judgment, but also a step in the policy rhythm.

Ten year contract to lock in profits

MRCB stated that the project will bring stable recurring income through a 10-year lease, while also enhancing the land value of Bukit Jalil. The relevant agreement is expected to be finalized in the third quarter of 2026, with the goal of completing construction by the end of 2027. At present, multiple parties have expressed interest in the data center, and further expansion of related projects cannot be ruled out in the future. For MRCB, the significance of this investment lies not only in the expected revenue of RM2.1 billion, but also in opening up a new growth curve. Against the backdrop of pressure on traditional energy businesses, digital infrastructure provides a more stable and long-term source of cash flow. For Malaysia's digital economy, whether the Bukit Jalil data center can truly attract top AI companies to settle in is the key to testing its strategic value.Editor/Cheng Liting
