In the hinterland of Chengdu Science City, a fusion lighthouse related to the future energy map is rising. The second phase of the China Fusion Tianfu Research and Development Center has recently started construction, and will build a top-notch radiation resistant material testing platform in China. This is not only a key achievement for Chengdu to seize the commanding heights of future industries, but also a clear footnote for China's fusion energy to move from technological catch-up to engineering leadership.
The project has officially started construction
On June 30, 2026, the second phase of the Tianfu Fusion Technology R&D Center project of China Fusion Energy Co., Ltd. started construction in the Chengdu Science City Fusion Science and Technology Innovation City in Tianfu New Area. The project is implemented by the China Fusion Organization and has received additional investment from the Heavy Industry Fund under Chengdu Production and Investment Group. It is the first infrastructure project to be implemented after the establishment of the enterprise, which means that China's domestic controllable nuclear fusion research has entered the stage of engineering development from experimental exploration.

Nuclear fusion has abundant reserves, is clean and low-carbon, and is widely recognized as the ultimate clean energy source. But there are huge engineering challenges from experimental devices to commercial reactors, and fusion reactor special materials are the most difficult core bottleneck to overcome. The fusion condition is accompanied by high temperature, strong neutron irradiation, and complex electromagnetic stress, and the material properties directly determine the safety and operational efficiency of the device. The total planned land area for the R&D center is about 500 acres, which will be constructed in two phases. The first phase will be put into use in May 2026. The second phase aims to address the global challenge of radiation resistant material damage in fusion reactors, and plans to construct a comprehensive material irradiation testing facility, which is equivalent to building a rigorous material testing platform for artificial suns. Only materials that pass performance testing can be used in fusion engineering devices.
Building a top-notch scientific research platform
This project is a core major infrastructure in China's domestic fusion field, and once fully completed, it will become a leading fusion research and development base in terms of scale and supporting level in China. The project will significantly enhance China's research and development capabilities in fusion engineering and accelerate the process of autonomous and controllable fusion energy; At the same time, promote the localization of nuclear related equipment, drive the growth of high-end manufacturing and strategic emerging industries, and build a fusion innovation system with international competitiveness.
