The palm forests and waste oil on both sides of the equator are trying to turn into the power for a passenger plane to soar into the sky. When energy giants join hands with aviation manufacturers, an experiment on blue sky carbon reduction is launched between islands - making aircraft trajectories cleaner and finding green exports to the future for tropical resources.

Both parties have reached a consensus on cooperation

Recently, Pertamina, the Indonesian national oil company, officially signed a memorandum of understanding with Boeing of the United States to jointly develop Indonesia's sustainable aviation fuel industry, and help the aviation industry reduce carbon emissions and upgrade energy green. The signing ceremony was successfully completed on July 8, 2026, at the Indonesia Airlines Summit held in Jakarta. This cooperation closely follows the development deployment of the Indonesian President's eight point vision, which regards the development of sustainable aviation fuels as the core measure to reduce aviation carbon emissions and strengthen the local aviation industry.

Indonesia has industrial advantages

According to the cooperation framework, the two companies will collaborate to build the SAF industry ecosystem in Indonesia, explore high-quality raw material resources, research and develop advanced production technologies, and help improve relevant support policies to promote the rapid implementation of projects. Indonesia has outstanding sustainable aviation fuel endowments and ranks among the top in ASEAN, with abundant production capacity reserves. According to relevant reports, the daily production surplus of SAF in Indonesia could reach 2.2 million barrels by 2050. Boeing estimates that the demand for air passenger transportation in Southeast Asia will continue to rise, with nearly 4900 new aircraft needed in the region by 2044. The green fuel market has vast potential.

Local layout continues to be implemented

At present, Indonesia's national oil company has deployed multiple SAF industry supporting measures, promoted fuel mass production and industry certification, and collaborated with aviation enterprises to carry out fuel application pilot projects. The Zhiraza Biological Refinery project under its umbrella can utilize green raw materials such as waste edible oil to produce sustainable aviation fuel and hydrogenated vegetable oil, improving the local production capacity system.
