When the circuit breaker at the 500 kV Yuxian substation in Wuhan quietly closed, sending a steady flow of electricity to this metropolis of over ten million people, few realized that this moment was rewriting the history of global power equipment. On May 29, 2026, the world’s first 550 kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) completely free of sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆) was successfully connected to the grid here. This milestone represented not merely the deployment of a piece of equipment, but the culmination of an intense, two-year sprint to take the technology from the exhibition floor to the power grid.

Why is a 550 kV SF₆-free solution so challenging?

Two years ago, at the CIGRE Session in Paris, Hitachi Energy’s EconiQ® 550 kV GIS was merely a prototype under the spotlight, drawing curious gazes alongside blunt skepticism from the industry. After all, eliminating SF₆ entirely in the ultra-high voltage sector was akin to asking an airplane to fly without fuel.

SF₆ is a "double-edged sword" for the power industry: while its insulation performance is nearly perfect, it is also one of the most potent greenhouse gases known to man, with a global warming potential approximately 25,000 times that of carbon dioxide and an atmospheric lifespan exceeding a thousand years. While SF₆-free solutions had already been rolled out for lower voltage levels, 550 kV equipment—due to the extreme electric field strengths and short-circuit breaking capabilities required—was long considered an "irreplaceable forbidden zone." For years, the industry held the view that SF₆ would remain indispensable at this voltage level for at least the next decade.

How was the "impossible" achieved in two years?

Yet, in the two years spanning the journey from Paris to Wuhan, a multinational R&D team turned the "impossible" into reality. Through an innovative eco-friendly gas mixture alternative, optimized gas compartment design, and rigorous type testing, the new equipment matched or even surpassed traditional SF₆ products in core metrics such as insulation, breaking performance, and sealing, while simultaneously reducing the unit's full-lifecycle carbon emissions by over 99%.
