The energy storage landscape in Europe has undergone significant changes, and compared to the development bottlenecks in the German and Spanish markets, Italy's approval efficiency has greatly improved. A new round of large-scale energy storage projects has been approved, and foreign investment continues to enter, making Italy a rapidly growing core hotspot for energy storage development in southern Europe.

Centralized implementation of projects

In early July 2026, the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security approved six independent battery energy storage projects at once, with a total scale of 720MW, covering the five major administrative regions of the country. The largest single project in this round is the 200MW energy storage project in Melfi City, Basilicata Region. British capital has won a total scale of 300MW, accounting for 42%. Since June, the pace of local energy storage approval has accelerated comprehensively, with a total of 17 projects approved within a month and a half, with a total scale of about 1.9GW, breaking the record for short-term approval of energy storage in southern Europe. The approved projects in this round are all independent energy storage, without the need to bind to wind and solar power stations, and can directly participate in peak shaving services in the electricity market.

The southern region becomes the core battlefield

The approved projects in this round show obvious southern agglomeration characteristics, with a total of 384MW approved in the three southern regions of Puglia, Basilicata, and Molise, accounting for more than half of the total scale. The southern part of Italy has abundant sunshine resources and a fast growth rate of photovoltaic installed capacity, but the power grid's external transmission capacity is weak. The contradiction between redundant photovoltaic power during lunchtime and a large electricity gap at night is prominent. Independent energy storage can effectively stabilize electricity price fluctuations, alleviate power grid congestion, and coupled with the efficient approval process in the southern region, it has become the core reason for the centralized layout of real estate enterprises.
