The waves of Bohai Bay beat against the reefs, and the contours of the mountains in eastern Shandong undulated in the heat wave. When the steel dragon crosses the mountain sea barrier, an energy artery connecting nuclear energy and load centers emerges. On the balance beam between ecology and development, builders use innovation as a pen to write a new footnote for China's ultra-high voltage.

In the scorching summer of July, there is a high temperature. At 10:16 on July 27, 2026, the last section of wire traction was completed, and the Yanwei 1000 kV high-voltage project of State Grid Shandong Electric Power Construction was fully connected.

Ultra high voltage full line connection

Yanweite High Voltage has achieved multiple domestic and global firsts: the world's first direct supply of ultra-high voltage from nuclear power, the first ultra-high voltage dual ring network core project in the province, and also the first synchronous construction ultra-high voltage project in mountainous and sea areas in China. After completion, the power grid scheduling will be more stable and flexible. The project has a huge scale, with the construction of one switch station and the expansion of two substations. The total length of the line is 1197 kilometers, and there are 2124 iron towers, including 822 mountain iron towers and 17 sea iron towers, covering 5 cities and 19 districts. Multiple participating units across the country collaborated on construction, with over 8000 peak construction personnel, more than 100 large-scale equipment, and more than 600 external units connected, resulting in over a thousand cross line operations. The effective construction period of the project is only 12 months, setting a record for the fastest high-pressure construction of similar models.

The construction in the sea area is full of challenges, and the mudflat geology, salt fog corrosion, cold winter and low temperature, and extreme weather bring multiple construction obstacles. The construction team innovates road construction, drilling, insulation, and anti-corrosion construction methods, forming five exclusive construction technology systems, and filling the gaps in domestic sea area ultra-high voltage construction technology. The entire line needs to cross 28 railways, 37 highways, and thousands of power lines, making it difficult to coordinate power outages across lines. The project relies on a new model of flat management and parallel operations to successfully complete large-scale cross line construction of multiple main lines. The project has launched a three color warning mechanism for nodes, achieving zero lag in the six major links of design, materials, construction, and coordination, normalizing the scheduling of large materials, and ensuring the timely supply of more than 300000 tons of equipment and building materials.

Innovate to overcome difficulties

Throughout the construction process, ecological protection requirements were implemented, and the technology of topsoil stripping and reuse was popularized. The stripping utilization rate exceeded 95%, and vegetation restoration was completed simultaneously with the construction. Four tower bases are located near the habitat of egrets. The team constructed them in a staggered manner based on the bird migration cycle, avoiding the breeding season and balancing engineering construction with bird protection, creating a model for the ecological protection of migratory birds on the State Grid.Editor/Gong Ziwei
