At 13:21 on July 16, 2026, the total electricity load in Shaoxing reached 11.38 million kilowatts, an increase of 0.8% from the peak of last summer, setting a new historical record. Under the strong control of subtropical high pressure, the power system of this industrial town in Zhejiang is undergoing an annual major test.

Newly added capacity of 1.687 million kVA

Before the beginning of summer, State Grid Shaoxing Power Supply Company seized the construction window period and put into operation 9 power grid projects, including the expansion of the 500 kV Guyue Substation, the expansion of the 220 kV Xizi Substation, and the construction of the 110 kV Lujia Substation, with a cumulative increase in substation capacity of 1.687 million kVA. This batch of projects focuses on the Keqiao Economic and Technological Development Zone (Binhai area), the southwestern part of Zhuji and other heavily loaded areas of the power grid, effectively solving local power supply bottlenecks.

The first grid side energy storage power station in Binhai New Area, Jiangbin 50MW/100MWh project, has been connected to the grid and put into operation on July 9th, filling the gap of large-scale energy storage peak shaving facilities in the region. The power station can complete approximately 66 million kilowatt hours of charging and discharging electricity annually, which is equivalent to saving about 13000 tons of standard coal.

Energy storage and photovoltaic off peak complementarity

Since the beginning of the solar term, the maximum output of photovoltaics in Shaoxing area has remained at around 4.5 million kilowatts, equivalent to 40% of the maximum electricity load, providing strong support for the power grid during the daytime. After the photovoltaic output returns to zero at night, the energy storage power station takes over the top relay - storing energy during the day and discharging at night, forming a staggered complementary pattern of daily charging and night discharging with photovoltaics.

State Grid Shaoxing Power Supply Company simultaneously conducted point-to-point on-site visits to explain the new regulations on virtual power plants, green certificate trading, and time of use electricity prices to enterprises, guiding them to adjust high energy consuming links to normal or low peak periods. Data shows that in the first half of this year, the industrial electricity consumption in Shaoxing reached 22.359 billion kilowatt hours, accounting for 73% of the total electricity consumption in society, a year-on-year increase of 4.51%. Industrial electricity remains the core driving force for load growth.

Supported by two ultra-high voltage projects

Further support is already on the way. The Gansu Zhejiang ± 800 kV HVDC transmission project has a total length of 2370 kilometers and a transmission capacity of 8 million kilowatts. The Shaoxing section of the line has been fully connected and entered the acceptance stage. The Shaoxing section of the Zhejiang 1000 kV high-voltage AC ring network project has fully started construction, with a length of 159.6 kilometers and a planned completion date of June 2028. After the two major ultra-high voltage projects are put into operation, Yijiao has been working together to provide stronger support for the mutual assistance and supply of electricity in the Shaoxing region.Editor/Cheng Liting
