The perennial drought and water shortage in the Middle East have long constrained the urban operation and industrial expansion due to the shortage of freshwater supply and demand in the entire Basra region. SINOHYDRO 5 has won the subcontracting project for the local seawater desalination water transmission system, building a water supply artery with an ultra long pipeline network and multi-stage pump stations, and using mature water conservancy technology to help Iraq improve its livelihood infrastructure, continuously shining the overseas business card of China's infrastructure.

Project Core Overview

The contract amount for the sub contracting project of the Basra seawater desalination water transmission system signed this time is 8.925 billion yuan, which is implemented in cooperation between SINOHYDRO 5 and Iraqi Ruida Group. The project involves laying a 240 kilometer main water pipeline, supporting the construction of one main pump station and nine distribution pump stations, with a designed daily water supply capacity of up to 1 million cubic meters. The overall project duration is 1410 days, including a 6-month preparation period, a 1350 day construction period, and a 24 month operation and maintenance warranty period after completion, to build a complete chain of integrated construction, operation, and maintenance. The water transmission project is a key supporting facility for the top seawater desalination project in Basra. Previously, China Power Construction had won a total contract worth over 17 billion yuan for the desalination plant and self owned power station, and the water transmission line is responsible for the core function of long-distance freshwater transportation.

Difficulties in construction

The project is located in Basra Province, Iraq, and the pipeline passes through complex landforms such as plains, rivers, and suburbs. The long-distance pipeline laying and multi-level pump station intelligent control pose strict challenges to survey, design, and on-site construction. The high temperature and dry climate environment in the Middle East also poses many challenges for equipment transportation, on-site operations, and building material protection. Based on the rich practical experience accumulated from large-scale cross regional water transfer projects in China, the construction team will optimize the construction plan according to local conditions, ensure the safe implementation of ultra long pipelines and pump station systems, and stabilize the output of large-scale water supply capacity.

Deep and profound multiple values

The implementation of the project will completely alleviate the water shortage in the coastal towns and industrial areas of Basra, fill the gaps in local water supply, and greatly improve people's livelihoods and industrial development foundation. A large order worth nearly 9 billion yuan can bring stable revenue to SINOHYDRO 5 in the long run, strengthen the overseas water conservancy business foundation, enhance the brand influence of China Energy Construction in the Iraqi market, and pave the way for future cooperation in water conservancy transformation and new energy projects. At the same time, this project once again demonstrates the competitive advantage of China's water conservancy infrastructure industry chain, laying a solid foundation for the deep expansion of the Middle East maritime market. The enterprise will also simultaneously do a good job in the full cycle risk prevention and control of geopolitical logistics funds.Editor/Min Jing
