As the starting point of the second and third lines of the West East Gas Transmission Pipeline, Khorgos Initial Compressor Station has officially exceeded the 600 billion cubic meter mark recently. This largest compressor station in Asia, rooted in the core hub of the the Belt and Road, has built a clean energy artery across thousands of kilometers for the central and eastern regions of China with stable operation for more than ten consecutive years.
The hard power behind 600 billion cubic meters of supply guarantee
This first compressor station, which was put into operation in 2009, has been running safely and smoothly for over 6000 days, with an annual gas transmission capacity of 60 billion cubic meters. In 2025, the annual gas transmission capacity of the station will reach 58.2 billion cubic meters, a year-on-year increase of 4.7% compared to 2024, maintaining a high operating level of over 50 billion cubic meters for the seventh consecutive year. As of late August 2026, 39.7 billion cubic meters of gas transmission has been completed, and it is expected to hit a historical high of 59 billion cubic meters for the whole year. The highest daily gas transmission capacity can reach 163 million cubic meters.

It undertakes the task of transporting cross-border natural gas from Central Asia and local coal to gas from Yili to the east. With a cumulative gas transmission capacity of 600 billion cubic meters, it is equivalent to replacing over 798 million tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by over 877 million tons, covering the daily gas needs of over 500 million people nationwide. It is an irreplaceable core hub in the domestic natural gas supply map.
Smart low-carbon upgrade activates long-term operational potential
At present, the station has established a full chain intelligent operation and maintenance system, integrating various intelligent equipment such as pan tilt laser methane detectors, machine vision AI analysis, and compressor intelligent diagnosis systems, achieving a comprehensive upgrade of station operation and maintenance from traditional manual inspection to intelligent centralized control.
Relying on the waste heat resources of the combustion driven compressor unit, the station has built the first natural gas transmission station waste heat power generation project in China, achieving zero direct emissions from the unit and an average annual power generation of over 65 million kWh, further consolidating the foundation for long-term stable operation while reducing costs and carbon emissions. This gas transmission line, stretching thousands of kilometers from border ports to thousands of households in the central and eastern regions, connects the two-way demand of Central Asian gas sources and domestic consumer markets.
