An economic dialogue in Yaound é has created an unprecedented intersection between African rainforests and North American capital. The US unveiled a list of investment opportunities covering hydropower, minerals, digital and other fields, sending a strong signal that bilateral cooperation is shifting from traditional aid to commercial development. However, it is still unknown whether the grand vision on the list of intentions can ultimately cross institutional barriers and become a reality.
The investment list has been heavily released
On August 27, 2026, the first Cameroon US Bilateral Economic and Business Dialogue concluded in Yaound é. The US has launched an investment opportunity worth approximately $7 billion, covering hydropower, key minerals, airports, digital, and logistics sectors. The Sanaga River 1040 MW hydropower project has become the largest single project with $3.5 billion.

This dialogue focuses on six major areas of consultation: technology, key minerals, infrastructure, energy, forestry, and logistics. The project portfolio announced by the US includes both ongoing existing projects and new intentions for cooperation.
Concentrated display of key projects
The largest power project is the Grand Eweng hydroelectric project on the Sanaga River developed by an American company, with an installed capacity of 1040 megawatts, which can alleviate Cameroon's power shortage and balance industrial and livelihood power supply. US companies are negotiating the construction of a $2 billion world-class airport in Douala, while simultaneously planning a total of $230 million for performance venues in three locations including Yaound é, to help Douala build a regional aviation business hub.

Promote the development of hematite and cobalt nickel manganese ore in the eastern province in terms of mineral resources; Planning artificial intelligence data centers and supporting power stations in the digital field, combining key mineral resources with computing power, in line with global supply chain and computing power development trends. The US layout of local mineral resources aims to lay the foundation for resources and infrastructure, and extend the industrial chain.
Landing faces practical challenges
Some commercial projects have relatively mature landing conditions, involving airport warehousing, cross-border payments, and sustainable timber cooperation. Both parties will establish a joint working group to track reform and project progress, and the second dialogue will be held in the United States in 2027. Keywords: Cameroon, hydropower projects, infrastructure, digital computing power

No major contracts were signed in this dialogue, and bilateral relations have shifted from traditional aid to business development for enterprises. The key constraints on whether the $7 billion intention can be implemented are the shortcomings in business such as taxation, logistics, and mining systems. 7 billion US dollars is just a list of intentions. Whether the project can be transformed from planning to reality depends on the effectiveness of the business environment reform and the ability of the Cameroon project to be transformed.Editor/Gong Ziwei
